The role of the sail: the angle can be adjusted according to the direction of the wind to effectively use the wind energy to push the ship forward. A hide, canvas, or other fabric that is hung from a mast and spread out to use wind to propel a boat on water. The types of sails, according to the different positions, are divided into bow sail, stern, upper sail, inclined sail, four-angle sail and triangular sail.
The first edge of a sail is called the leading edge and is located at the front of the ship. The trailing edge of the rear wing is called the trailing edge of the sail. The imaginary horizontal line from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the sail is called the chord, the camber of the sail is called the draft, and the vertical distance from the chord to the point of maximum draft is called the chord depth. The side of the sail that is filled with air to form a concave curve is called the windward side, and the side that blows outward to form a convex shape is called the leeward side.
Types of Sails
1. Modern single mast sail. The most common in small and medium sized sailboats is the single mast sail. This kind of ship has a mast and two sails. The mainsail is a one-sided, triangular sail with the leading edge mounted on the mast and the tail mounted on a boom extending rearwardly from the mast.
The triangular sail, known as the "Bermuda rig" or sometimes the "Marconi sail", is named because it was developed two centuries ago on ships in the Bermuda region. According to the physics of generating power when the wind blows over a sail, when a ship is sailing in the wind, a tall and thin sail usually produces more force. The vast majority of sailboats now use Bermuda sails.
3. Double-mast sails. The main advantage of double-masted sails is that each sail is smaller than the corresponding sail size on a sloop of the same size, making navigation easier. Small sails are lighter, easier to raise and level, and smaller to store. Having a three-sided sail also offers the possibility and flexibility of more sail control combinations.
