FRP is made of synthetic resin as the matrix and glass fiber as the reinforcing material. It has similar strength with steel, superior performance of water resistance and corrosion resistance, and its surface is smooth and beautiful as a mirror, and it can be molded as a whole. But it also has some shortcomings, such as small stiffness, poor wear resistance and so on. In particular, there are many factors that affect the quality (such as the quality of raw materials, the technical quality of operators, production conditions and environmental factors, etc.), which makes the quality of similar products very different.

Compared with steel and wooden ships, FRP ships have the characteristics of less maintenance, which is determined by the superior performance of FRP itself. However, FRP, like all materials, also has aging problems, except that the aging process is relatively slow. Even if gel coat resin is applied to the surface of the ship to form a protective layer, it will be damaged and thinned under frequent friction and environmental erosion due to the thickness of only 0.3-0.5mm. Therefore, FRP less maintenance is not without maintenance, proper maintenance can not only maintain a beautiful appearance, but also extend the life of FRP boats.

Avoid contact with sharp, hard objects. Friction and collision between FRP hull and shore stones, concrete structures and metal components will cause scratches and other damages. Protective measures should be taken. For example, anti-collision and wear-resistant metal and rubber fender materials should be set up at the bow, wharf and side edges that are often subject to friction, and wear-resistant rubber and plastic soft materials should be laid on the deck.

Found damage, timely repair. Check the hull frequently, such as resin peeling, deep scratches, exposed fibers. It must be repaired in time, otherwise the damage will be accelerated due to the infiltration of water.

When not in use, especially in the cold winter season, it should be placed ashore. Because FRP has certain water absorption, water can gradually penetrate into the interior along the tiny channel of glass fiber and resin interface, thus gradually decreasing the strength of FRP. The infiltrated water will freeze when cold, expanding the seepage channel and causing greater harm. Therefore, when the boat is not in use in winter, it should be set aside from the water bank to volatilize the infiltrated water and gradually recover its strength. This can prolong the service life of the boat. After landing, the boat should be cleaned first, put it away with liners, and usually put it indoors. If it is placed outdoors, it should be covered with tarpaulin cloth and often ventilated to prevent moisture.

On May 15, 2024, our company participated in the kick-off ceremony of four 64/68 meter deck transport ships (two each type) jointly organized by the UAE shipowner and Xinchang Shipyard. As the design team of this project, we attended this milestone event together with the shipowner and shipyard leaders.
